Organ transplants

Transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a diseased organ is replaced with a healthy organ taken from the body of someone who has died.

The person receiving a donated organ is the recipient and the person donating an organ is the donor.

Transplantation outcomes

Anti-rejection drugs (immunosuppressants), which transplant recipients must take for the rest of their lives, have significantly improved transplant outcomes.

• One year after the transplant, more than 90 % of transplanted organs are functional.
• Five years after the transplant, the success rate is close to 70 %.
