Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis is a viral disease characterised by high fever, chills and headaches. The virus is transmitted by infected mosquito bites in various Asian countries (northern Thailand, north-eastern India, China, etc.).

In severe cases, neurological signs related to brain damage (encephalitis) appear rapidly. The outcome is unpredictable and can be fatal.

Vaccination is recommended for families travelling to rural areas in Asia for long periods of time.
