Travel sickness
Many people are affected by 'travel sickness', whether they are travelling by car, bus, train, plane or boat. It is a general feeling of discomfort, accompanied by nausea or even vomiting. Travel sickness is caused by your sense of balance being disrupted, due to the movement of the vehicle.
Preventing travel sickness
- Do not travel on an empty stomach.
- Eat light.
- Consume solids rather than liquids.
- Avoid drinking alcohol.
- Keep your head straight and avoid sudden movements during the journey.
- Look at the scenery through the window; observing motion relieves travel sickness.
- Sit facing forwards, in the direction of travel.
- On a boat, choose a seat outside.
- Avoid reading or writing so your eyes can focus on the motion of travel.
Medication to combat travel sickness
Preventive medication is available to help you avoid travel sickness. This must be taken before you travel. Certain medication is freely available in pharmacies.
It is recommended that you ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
